The South Dakota School of Mines is planning to build a new 60,000-80,000-square-foot student recreation center and field house.
The school says it has signed a contract with an architectural and engineering group to prepare designs to present to the South Dakota Board of Regents in April.
The facility is expected to join an existing recreation center. The new facility will have a rock-climbing wall, an indoor 200-meter track, recreational courts, fitness center and locker rooms. It will also have a lounge for students to study in and a food and drink bar.
The building is expected to cost $7 million to $10 million. A $10-per-credit fee approved by students will fund about $6 million of the project. The university must raise the rest of the money.
