McCaffrey's 36 points leads Augustana Over USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cameron McCaffrey poured in a career-high 36 points leading Augustana to a 70-58 win over cross-town rival University of Sioux Falls on Saturday night in front of 3,805 fans at the Elmen Center on Saturday night. Augustana improves to 7-0, 3-0 NSIC while USF drops to 4-3 on the season, 0-3 in NSIC play.
McCaffrey is the first Viking to score 30 or more points in a game since Cody Schilling dropped 30 at SMSU on Dec. 3, 2010.
Augustana has now won 11 straight games over the University of Sioux Falls and 18 of the last 19 meetings. The Vikings are a perfect 7-0 against USF under Tom Billeter.
McCaffrey was a perfect 13 of 13 from the free throw line helping the Vikings to a season-high 90 percent shooting from the charity stripe. Daniel Jansen had a big night for the Vikings finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.
A.J. Holland led USF in scoring with 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Derek Brown added 13 points for the Cougars drilling three 3-pointers in the game.
Augustana finished the game shooting 46 percent (20 of 43) from the field but hit 27 of 30 shots from the free throw line. USF shot 35 percent on 18 of 51 shooting, including 9 of 25 from 3-point range. The Cougars were hot early from 3-point range but cooled off as the night went on.
USF jumped out to a 5-2 lead just over two minutes into the game before the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 lead with 15:03 left in the half. McCaffrey gave Augustana the 9-5 lead drilling a 3-pointer on the wing.
After the 3-pointer by McCaffrey, USF went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 19-11 lead. During that stretch the Cougars hit two 3-pointers. McCaffrey put an end to the long run, and started an 11-0 run for Augustana, drilling his second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to 19-14 at the media timeout.
After back-to-back baskets by Olson and Pierce, Daniel Jansen went to work down low hitting two straight hook shots in the paint to put the Vikings back in front 22-19 with 6:53 to play in the first half.
Augustana and USF traded points over the next minute of play before Augustana took a 26-25 lead when McCaffrey hit two free throws. From that point on the two teams would play four minutes of scoreless basketball until Alex Robey drilled a 3-pointer for USF. With the shot the Cougars took a 28-26 lead.
McCaffrey missed a layup with time running down in the half and Jansen grabbed the rebound and got the put-back to send the game into the break tied at 28.
Augustana shot 45 percent (10 of 22) from the field in the first half led by Jansen who was 4 of 6. Augustana was 2 of 4 from 3-point range in the half, with McCaffrey drilling both shots from behind the arc.
USF shot 37 percent (10 of 27) from the field but drilled six 3-pointers in the half with Holland and Brown each hitting two. Holland led the Cougars with 10 first half points.
McCaffrey led the Vikings in the first half with 12 points while Jansen finished with eight. The first half saw seven ties and seven lead changes.
The two teams started where they left off in the first half the Vikings and Cougars went nearly three minutes without a basket to start the second half. Rader ended the drought to give USF a 30-28 lead before Jansen hit two free throws and a bucket to put the Vikings up 32-30.
Augustana followed that with an 18-9 run over the next 5:26 to take a 50-39 lead. During the run McCaffrey scored 11 points to push Augustana to an 11 point lead.
Another basket by McCaffrey gave Augustana its largest lead of the night at 13 before USF went on a 6-0 run to cut Augustana's lead to seven at 52-45 with 7:35 remaining in the game. The Cougars extended their run to 8-0 on a layup by Rader to cut the lead to five at 52-47 but Evan Pierce slowed them down knocking down two free throws to push Augustana's lead to 54-47.
Brown made it a four point game at 54-50 with 5:46 to play in the game nailing his third 3-pointer of the game. The two teams traded the next 13 points of the game and the Vikings held on to a 59-55 lead with 4:06 to play.
USF cut Augustana's lead to three at 59-56 on a free throw by Rader but the Vikings were able to pull away over the final three and a half minutes of the game for the win. Augustana hit 11 free throws in the final three minutes of the game walking away with a 70-58 win.
Augustana will hit the road for the first time this season next weekend traveling to Winona State and Upper Iowa. The road trip begins at Winona State on Friday night at 8 p.m. Augustana and Upper Iowa will tip-off at 6 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa on Saturday.
