USD Men Fall to UMKC

Vermillion, SD—Kansas City shot a school-record 82 percent (19 of 23) in the second half and made a season-high 13 three-pointers to get past South Dakota 90-86 Saturday at the DakotaDome. The win ended a nine-game losing streak for the Kangaroos (5-13, 2-4 Summit).

 

UMKC guard Estan Tyler scored a career-high 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting and teammate Thomas Staton added 19 including a full-court 3-pointer at the first-half horn that brought the ‘Roos within four, 41-37, at halftime.

 

Juevol Myles scored 24 points to lead South Dakota (7-11, 3-3), which made 11 three-pointers, shot 53 percent from the field and committed just four turnovers. Brandon Bos added 19, Trevor Gruis had 14 and Karim Rowson had 12.

 

South Dakota closed the first half on a 22-9 run to take its halftime lead and quickly extended it to nine following a 3 by Casey Kasperbauer and two free throws from Gruis. Kansas City made 7 of 10 to begin the second half, but trailed 63-55 with 12 minutes remaining.

 

A layup by Fred Chatmon was the first of 11 consecutive made field goals by the ‘Roos spanning 11 minutes. Six different UMKC players contributed to the streak including Tyler, who hit two three’s and added a layup that gave Kansas City an 81-72 lead with 3:07 remaining. The Roos’ out-scored the ‘Yotes 28-13 during the flurry of made shots.

 

Jordan Boots missed an open 3-pointer with 26 seconds left that would have trimmed Kansas City’s lead to three. The ‘Roos made 5 of 6 free throws in the closing minute to seal the win. Myles hit a 3 with two seconds left for the game’s final points.

 

Kansas City finished 33 of 54 from the field (61 percent) and 13 of 24 (54 percent) from three-point range. Tyler made five three-pointers and Kirk Korver added four more and had 15 points. Bos made a career-high five three-pointers for South Dakota, which finished 11 of 19 (58 percent) from beyond the arc.
