Augustana Women Roll Past Minot State

Bookmark and Share

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Alex Feeney scored 20 of her season-high 26 points in the first half to lead 12th-ranked Augustana in a 94-66 rout of Minot State. The Vikings improve to 14-2 overall and remain in first place of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 10-2 league record.  The Beavers drop to an even 8-8 overall, 4-8 in the NSIC.

Feeney finished the night 9-10 shooting from the floor with a perfect 4-4 from three and 4-4 from the free throw line.  Feeney also pulled down 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double in as many games.  This was the 20th double-double of Feeney’s career.  Over the Vikings’ five-game winning streak, Feeney is averaging 19.2 points and 10 rebounds.

Andrea Whitney put in a career performance with a 14-point evening on an efficient 6-9 shooting.  The Vikings defense held double-double machine Carly Boag to 7-19 shooting and 15 points.  The Minot State junior still managed to grab 12 rebounds

Augsutana was outscored in four of the five specialty categories, but the Viking bench held a 34-10 edge over the Beavers.  Whitney led the Augustana reserves with her 14 points and Cami Koehn finished with 10 points, her fifth double-digit scoring effort this season.

Augustana never faced a deficit but couldn’t create separation from Minot State until an unsuspecting offensive threat emerged for the Vikings to go along with Feeney’s scorching first half.

Whitney scored her 10 first-half points in a span of six minutes leading a 19-4 Augustana run to create a cushion for the Vikings.  Whitney cashed in on three straight layups giving the Vikings a 32-16 lead with just over seven minutes left in the half.

The Vikings and Beavers traded buckets before Augustana closed the half on a 9-0 run including a buzzer-beating lay-in from Emily Bose.  The Vikings took a 53-25 lead into halftime and had all but sewn up their fifth straight win.

The Beavers never came closer than 21 points in the second half as nine Vikings scored to preserve the blowout victory.  Augustana’s lead reached 32 points twice in the second half with the first coming after a deep three-pointer by Emily Schulte to give the Vikings a 63-31 edge.

Minot State narrowed the gap to 63-41 after 10 straight points, seven of which came from Francesca DeAngelis who finished with a game-high 27 points.  The Vikings then built their lead back to its pinnacle of 32 points when Lydia Nelson followed a Faith Tinklenberg three with a free throw.

The teams traded baskets until the final buzzer and the Vikings walked off the court victorious, 94-66.

Shaunteva Ashley led an unselfish attack with six assists and just one turnover and the Vikings racked up 28 assists, just one short of their season high.

Augustana looks to avenge their only losses of the year next weekend when they visit Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State.  The Vikings begin with the Golden Bears on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
