Vikes fall to Upper Iowa

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa (10-3, 6-1 NSIC) got a pin by Bryce Lumzy at 157 pounds, which propelled the Peacocks to a 21-15 victory over 15th-ranked Augustana on Friday night in Sioux Falls.

Augustana (9-6, 4-3 NSIC) got an early win at 125 pounds but lost six of the last nine bouts of the night.

Augustana jumped out to a 3-0 lead after TJ North won a 6-2 decision over Chris Paulus at 125 pounds to start the night. North held a slight edge at 3-2 after an escape by Paulus but he was able to gain a late takedown to secure the win.

Upper Iowa tied the match at three when Trevor Franklin, ranked second in the country at 133 pounds, earned a 5-2 decision over Augustana’s Jeremiah Peterson. Upper Iowa took its first lead of the match, at 6-3, winning the 141-pound bout. Matt Paulus earned a 6-1 decision over Augustana’s Brandon Charbonneau, who had won 14 of his last 15 bouts heading into tonight.

Augustana’s Nate Herda, ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, won a 3-1 overtime decision over Jordan Rinken to tie the dual at six. Upper Iowa answered quickly at 157 pounds when Bryce Lumzy pinned Zach Friederich in 53 seconds to give the Peackocks a 12-6 lead.

At 165 pounds, Augustana’s Parker Swanson got a late takedown but came up short in a 5-4 loss to Wade Gobin, who is ranked fourth in the country. With the win Upper Iowa took 15-6 lead into the 174-pound bout where Blake Sorensen up-ended Augustana’s Jeff Nielsen in a 5-3 decision to make the score 18-6.

Upper Iowa extended its lead to 21-6 after Mitch Schultz won an 8-2 decision over Augustana’s Sean Derry at 184 pounds. The Vikings earned six points at 197 pounds when sixth-ranked Jayd Docken won by forfeit at 197 pounds to make the score 21-12.

In the final bout of the night, Augustana’s Brian Schultz earned a 3-2 decision over UIU’s Jeremy Brazil to make the final score 21-15 in favor of the Peacocks.
