MITCHELL, S.D. -- The defending Class AA girls state basketball champion Mitchell Lady Kernels were favorites to repeat until stumbling in early January at Washington and Aberdeen Central.
Those early defeats might have been a bad thing for the rest of the state, because Mitchell is starting to look like a championship team again.
"Well after those two losses we came back even stronger. Yeah we're coming back as a team." Mitchell Junior Macy Miller said.
The Kernels defeated and avenged their earlier defeat at Central, pummeling the top ranked Huskies 55-37 on Friday night.
It was Aberdeens first loss of the season and Mitchell's 9th straight win. SDSU recruits Miller and Kerri Young combined for 44 points and say the early adversity rallied the team.
"Well we played really strong and we came out with lots of confidence, and made big threes, driving to the basket, and we played good defense." Miller said.
"We knew what we had to do to beat them. I mean, we had a pretty good gameplan and, I mean, when we played them last time in Aberdeen I don't think we were neccessarily ready to play. So we had something to play for tonight and so, we all came out pretty excited to do what we had to do." Young said.
