Landowner Trying To Sell Portion Of Wounded Knee

Bookmark and Share

Another piece of land that is historically significant to the Sioux tribes is up for sale by a private landowner.

James Czywczynski is trying to sell a fraction of the Wounded Knee National Historic landmark for $3.9 million to the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Czywczynski's family has owned the 40-acre parcel of land since 1968. The land sits adjacent to where 300 Lakota men, women and children were killed by the 7th Cavalry in 1890.

Czywczynski says that he would like to see the land go to the tribe, but if they do not step up soon, he will open bidding up to non-Native Americans.

A coalition of Sioux tribes raised $9 million last month to purchase land in the Black Hills they consider sacred.
