Interstate 90 Crash Leaves At Least One Dead

Bookmark and Share

We know at least one person is dead following an accident on Interstate 90 Saturday night. The accident happened at around 5:15 p.m. near mile marker 395, just west of the Interstate 90 and Interstate 29 interchange.

Westbound lanes were shutdown on portions on Interstate 90 for about 40 minutes so two helicopters could land in the area, in case patients needed to be taken to the hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says they don't know what caused the single vehicle crash, but they do know that the Red Ford Explorer, with four occupants inside, was traveling eastbound on I-90 when it veered to the left. The patrol says it launched off an embankment and landed on the embankment on the opposite side.

Sgt. Steve Swenson with the South Dakota Highway Patrol said, "When it traveled into the median, there's a little bit of an incline when it gets to the bridge and it launched off that and then hit the embankment on the opposite side."

According to the patrol, the occupants were all wearing seatbelts. They say the crash was so bad, at least one person died.

The patrol isn't releasing how many people were killed or the extent of their injuries until their family is notified. However, they say the occupants of the car are local.

We'll have more information as it becomes available on our website at KDLT.com.
