Correctional Officer, Inmates Injured In Rollover

Bookmark and Share

A correctional officer and state prison inmates were injured when a vehicle they were in rolled over on Monday morning.

The officer was driving from the Rapid City Minimum Unit to a work site near Deadwood when the Chevrolet Suburban they were driving in slid into the ditch and rolled near mile post 48 on Highway 14A.

Roads were reportedly slick at the time of the accident.

One inmate used a radio in the vehicle to alert authorities of the accident. All of the inmates remained at the scene and were compliant when officers arrived.

One inmate was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital where he is being treated for injuries suffered in the accident. The other inmates were taken to Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital.  Another inmate suffered an injured shoulder, while two of the other inmates were treated for minor injuries.  All six have been transported back to Rapid City.

The officer was transported to Sturgis Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
