Golfers who have been waiting all winter to spend a day out on the green had their chance on Saturday.
Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls opened their courses this week and have been busy ever since.
The pings of clubs hitting golf balls and the rumble of carts along the paths could be heard all across Elmwood Golf Course on Saturday, where, after months of cold and snow, hundreds of eager golfers returned for the first time since December.
“You can’t tell by our game sometimes, but we have a lot of fun. It's a nice day, good to be out. When you get to be our age just moving is half the battle,” said Sioux Falls resident Robert Benson.
Benson and a few friends are happy to be back in their element, but said they wish they could have gotten as early a start as last season.
“We probably had 20 rounds in by last year because it was so warm. (It was) unusually warm,” said Benson.
The popular Sioux Falls course opened their driving range on Thursday and had both courses back in business on Friday. The opening was early into spring, but later than usual due to the winter weather.
“We were open March 7th last year. A little bit different, but anything before April 1st is still pretty good and I think everybody is ready to go this year for sure., said Danny Sinken, Head Professional at Elmwood Golf Course.
“The weather forecast said it was going to be a warm spring and the ground hog said it was going to come early and it never happened. So we've been chomping at the bit!” said Bill Cheslow, an avid golfer from Sioux Falls.
Cheslow has been waiting months to practice his shot, but wishes the weather felt a little more like springtime.
“It could be a little bit warmer and a little less wind, but for March, it's pretty good,” said Cheslow.
However, for some, the weather for the opening weekend couldn't be better.
“It's Easter weekend and it's a beautiful day. We drove down from St. Paul because there is no snow down here and we might as well enjoy the beautiful state of South Dakota,” said Michael Sweeney.
Last year Elmwood had the links open until December 12th. They hope another mild start to winter will allow them to keep them open just as long.
