Fundraiser For Crash Victims

The seven vehicle accident on 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue on Valentine’s Day left one dead and several people injured.

One of those injured was a Sioux Falls mother of four, Ameina Wolf. After suffering a spinal fracture and shattered shoulder in the accident, she has finally been released from intensive care and is recovering at home.

When Sandra Carman heard the news that her co-worker, Ameina Wolf, had been in a car accident, she couldn't believe it.

“I said, 'it does look like her vehicle, but it's really not her right?', and they said, 'we don't know yet,’ and later in the day, they confirmed that it was,” said Sandra Carman, Ameina’s co-worker at Visionary Eye Clinic.

Ameina, her husband and three of their children were in one of seven vehicles involved in the Valentine's Day accident on 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue. Police said a vehicle, traveling well above the speed limit, hit their Dodge Durango, causing a chain reaction. Their Durango was heavily damaged and Ameina was severely injured.

“She was in intensive care for quite a while and has now been released from the hospital and she's recovering at home," said Carman.

Now Ameina's co-workers at Visionary Eye Clinic in Sioux Falls are doing everything they can to help her and her family get back on their feet.

"It's going to be a long road of recovery and she and her family and her babies need help, and so that's what we are trying to do,” said Carman.

With help from the community, the clinic is holding a fundraiser on Saturday.

“A lot of folks know about Ameina's situation and as soon as we brought it up, what we were doing, it was really very easy to do," said Carman’s husband, Tom Wiertzema.

The clinic on 41st Street and Valley View Road will be offering free-will donation eye exams and an eyeglass frame sale, with all proceeds going towards the fund.

“We came up with the idea because this is what we know best. So we decided to employ those skills and see if we could help out in any way and pay it forward,” said Carman.

The event begins at 9 A.M. Saturday and will go until 4 P.M. The clinic is asking for a $70 good-will donation for the eye exams, which is the normal fee. Donations of diapers, food items and cash are also welcome.

Thrivent Financial has agreed to match donations up to $2000.
