Cause Unknown In Crash That Killed Family

Bookmark and Share

The cause of a crash that took the lives of the Vollmer family is undetermined.

Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer says that the vehicle, driven by 52-year-old James Vollmer, had no mechanical issues. Joffer says that James Vollmer was not speeding, had no medical issues and that drugs or alcohol were not a factor.

The closest witness to the crash said they didn't see any reckless driving and cellphone records indicate that nobody was on the phone at the time of the accident.

Joffer says that according to witnesses, the vehicle was in the passing lane when it went off of the road, hitting a guardrail.  The vehicle then went into a ravine. Road conditions were good at the time of the accident.

Joffer says he was hoping to bring some closure to Brittany Vollmer who was at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA at the time of the accident.

The family was returning home from a basketball tournament in Salem.

16-year-old Alyssa Vollmer, 13-year old Caleb Vollmer, 52-year-old James Vollmer and 48-year-old Julie Vollmer were killed in the accident on February 23rd.
