SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana picked up 12 hits and belted three home runs in a 13-4 win over Northwestern (Iowa) (12-13) on Tuesday afternoon in Sioux Falls. Jack Goihl went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs in the game for the Vikings (15-10).

Sam Gotham put in a solid effort on the mound for the Vikings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Gotham pitched seven innings and gave up just three hits and two runs. The senior right-hander struck out three batters and forced 13 ground ball outs.

Brian Duxbury went 2-for-3 at the plate and hit his first home run of the season. Nate Hewes delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for his second longball of the season.

Marcus O’Neill and Kye Winter both added two hits for the Vikings as O’Neill went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Winter was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

Gotham set the Red Raiders down in order in the first three innings and the Vikings struck first taking a 1-0 lead on a solo shot by Duxbury.

The Vikings then exploded for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to go in front 7-0. Augustana loaded the bases in the inning after a leadoff walk by Jake Petersen, a single by O’Neill and a walk by Borchardt.

Tony Viger then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Goihl stepped up and delivered a two-RBI single to right field scoring Viger and O’Neill. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jason Rasmussen delivered a three-RBI double to right center to clear the bases. Rasmussen’s three RBI is a career-high.

Northwestern got on the board to make it a 7-1 game in the top of the fourth inning when Cody Groskreutz sent an RBI single to right field. The Red Raiders plated another run in the top of the fifth inning when Micah Linn grounded out to the shortstop to score Nikko Melonas who reached on a fielder’s choice to make the score 7-2.

Augustana pushed its lead to 11-2 scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. O’Neill and Viger both had RBI doubles in the inning and the big blow came on Goihl’s two-run home run, his second home run of the season.

Hewes hit a two run pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring the score to 13-2 before Northwestern’s Mitch Peschon hit a two run home run in the bottom of the ninth bringing the score to 13-4.

Augustana returns to NSIC action tomorrow afternoon hosting the University of Sioux Falls in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field.
