SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Kyle Young belted a pair of home runs, while collecting a career-high five hits with a career-high six RBIs to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 10-5 victory over Winona State in game two of a doubleheader on Thursday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Winona State hit four home run, including two by NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Seth McMullen, to earn an 11-3 victory in the opener.

SMSU is now 7-13-1 overall, 2-4 NSIC, while WSU is 9-9 overall, 3-1 NSIC.

Young finished game two 5 for 5 with three runs scored, while drilling a three-run homer in the first and a two-run homer in the third.  Ryan Engels also hit a homer in game two – a two-run homer in the seventh – and finished with three RBIs.

Taylor Klingenberg (1-1) picked up his first career victory for SMSU, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits, while striking out two and walking two in five-plus innings.  Dylan Shoemaker pitched three shutout innings in relief, while Corby McGlauflin tossed a perfect ninth inning to close the victory.

SMSU opened the scoring in the first inning as Jon Ellils and Brian Ness with one out, before Young stepped to the plate drilled a three-run homer off of the foul pole in right field.

In the third, Ness once again coaxed a one-out walk and Young delivered with a two-run opposite-field shot over the left-center field fence.

WSU pushed across two runs in the third to make the score 5-2, before Engels gave SMSU a 6-2 lead in the fourth with a sac fly scoring Steven Kremer.

The Warriors scored two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to trim the Mustangs lead to 6-5, but Shoemaker ended the inning with a fly out with the tying run on third base.

SMSU picked up a big run in the seventh with a two-out rally, taking advantage of a wild pitch.  With two outs, Young singled and was followed by a strikeout by Nick Tillo, but the pitch went to the backstop, allowing Tillo to reach base.  Jarred Carlson came through with a clutch single to right field scoring Young and pushing the lead to 7-5.

In the home half of the seventh, WSU put runners on first and third with two outs, but Shoemaker picked off McMullen at third base to end the scoring threat.

SMSU added to the lead in the eighth as Tanner Neale singled with one out before Engels clubbed his second homer of the season to make the score 9-5.  Young later added an infield RBI single to score Ellis and make the score 10-5.

In game two, Carlson drilled an RBI double in the second to tie the game at 1-1, but WSU opened the game up with two runs in the second and four runs in the third to cruise to the victory.

Jordon Kontz and Tillo led a seven-hit SMSU attack with two hits each, while Josh Hanson added two RBIs.

Colton Smith (0-3) took the loss for SMSU allowing seven runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Southwest Minnesota State continues NSIC play this weekend with a four-game series versus Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday.  The series is scheduled to be played in Marshal, but field conditions may force the series to be played at a neutral site.  An official announcement will be made on Friday.
