Upcoming Storm Causing Construction Delays

Bookmark and Share

When the 1st of April comes around, the City of Sioux Falls typically has plans for major construction projects, however, some jobs are already being delayed because of the possibility of rain and snow.

Jeff Wilde with the City of Sioux Falls Public Works Engineering Divsion said, "Well, it's South Dakota so you never know for sure."

Even though it's South Dakota, it's hard to hear the word 'snow' in the month of April. And it's even harder for construction crews to begin projects throughout the city when they know a storm is coming.

Wilde said, "If we got set up and we got going and then we had snow and rain then that would shut us down and then we would have to pick up again and start over."

The city was expecting to begin concrete repairs on 41st Street from Kelley to Kiwanis Avenue on Monday, but because mother nature has different plans, the contractor does too. For now, cones are set to the side.

"The contractor on this job decided to postpone, wait and see what the weather does," said Wilde.

But on the other side of town, there's a different philosophy.

Wilde said, "If it does stay cold, we just have to prepare the surfacing and the concrete for the cold weather."

The same kind of work is being done on 10th and 11st Street from Minnesota to Second Avenue.
But as you can tell by all of the orange cones and slow moving traffic, it's definitely April. Rain or shine, his contractor isn't wasting anytime. Crews are getting started on Monday.

Wilde said, "It's not like where you've got the full street ripped up and all it is is gravel so we have some flexibility on how we can do our work."

Even though they may not be ripping out any concrete just yet, it's hard to tell what they right decision is.

"We'll see what the weather does and what the right move was," said Wilde.

As far as the construction work on 41st Street, although crews will begin a few days late, officials with the City of Sioux Falls say they plan for these type of delays. The city will send out an update 24 hours before they do decide to begin.
