Storm Hurts SF Garden Business

Bookmark and Share

This spring the Midwest has experienced a lot of winter weather and while some businesses are booming with cleanup efforts, such as tree and snow removal companies, others are at a stand-still.

For the past month, greenhouses and garden centers are seeing very little traffic flow, because a lot of trees and plants can't bear the extreme cold conditions.

The Cliff Avenue Greenhouse and Garden Center in Sioux Falls said they receive nearly 15 calls a day from people asking when their nursery will be up and running, but with the cold and snow, the trees and flowers can't survive outside.

"It's just been so relentless this year," said Laura Kalfs with Cliff Avenue Greenhouse and Garden Center.

Despite the return of the sun and melting snow, the unpredictable white stuff is invading spring time.

"This year has just been weeks and weeks of just waiting and waiting and waiting and we keep getting hit with snow and ice and cold," said Kalfs.

This time last year, the nursery was fully stocked but now snow has taken over displays and isn't expected to be stocked until May.

"We had shrubs out for sale, trees, we even had our ponds up and running, it was wonderful last year," said Kalfs.

However, certain flowers, trees and shrubs can’t handle what the winter weather has poured on the city this season.

The nursery isn't the only section taking the heat, or lack of, the Greenhouse has been slow moving too.

"On cool days , we're having to bag everything up so the customer can get it home safely without getting any frost on their plants," said Kalfs.

The gardening company has also been forced to delay stock shipments from out-of-state, such as from Minnesota, due to wicked weather conditions.

"We spend months planning these trucks out and getting them lined up to get in a certain week and now we've had to switch things around and get them changed for that," said Kalfs.

With 70's in this week's forecast, the promising weather is something to look forward to.

"Just do even get out and just do some things in your yard and enjoy some sunshine, we just hadn't had that opportunity at all yet this year," said Kalfs.

Staff also said they've closed early nearly every day this month and are having a hard time finding things to keep their employees busy on the job.

Cliff Avenue Greenhouse and Garden Center hopes to open their nursery early May, which they predict will be overwhelmingly busy to make up for lost time.
