Klein Wins World Championship

Bookmark and Share

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University senior Raeanne Klein has experienced plenty of success at various archery meets thus far in her collegiate archery career, but this weekend, Klein added a prestigious new title to her resume: world champion.

Klein, a senior from Gregory, S.D., won the world indoor championship in the freestyle division Sunday afternoon in Yankton, S.D. She beat out six other competitors to earn the title.

After the first day of competition Friday, Klein was tied for first with Spain’s Lorena Alcaraz Monzon after both competitors shot a 297 out of 300. In the second day of competition, both archers shot a 298, but on the third and final day of competition, Klein shot a perfect 300 to pull ahead of Monzon, who shot a 299. Melinda Steinmann of South Africa took third. Also in Klein’s division was an archer from South America and three other archers from the United States.

Klein’s latest wins comes a week after she participated in the U.S. Collegiate Archery Northern Regional Intercollegiate Archery Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wis. Despite cold conditions that included some snow showers, Klein finished first after the elimination rounds. She shot a 580 out of 720 in the qualifying round and then won head-to-head competition the next day. The results from the final day were added to her indoor national score of 1,164 and were good enough to earn her all-region honors for the women’s bowhunter division.

Up next for Klein is the Collegiate National Outdoor Championships at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. At the outdoor championships, Klein will compete for the national title, All-American honors and all-academic honors. All-American is determined by scores from indoor and outdoor nationals, and all-academic is scores from both national meets plus archers must have at least a 3.0 GPA.
