Changes At The Empire Mall

Bookmark and Share

The Empire Mall is undergoing a big facelift as part of a huge renovation project that broke ground in January.

On Monday, KDLT decided to take our cameras inside and see the progress firsthand.

When you walk through the doors of the Empire Mall, you're bound to notice some changes.

"A lot of ceiling work, and of course in here all these new pillars,” said Sioux Falls resident, Conrad Dice.

From the ceiling, to the floor, to the ‘pardon our dust’ signs, its changes that are hard to miss.

“We've never had a complete renovation before so this is really exciting!" said Jennifer Morrison, Director of Marketing and Business Development for the Empire Mall.

The Empire Mall is undergoing its biggest renovation ever, updating everything from the bathrooms, to the ceiling tiles.

“It's a substantial project and we have a lot going on, but I think in the end it will all be worth it," said Morrison.

Shoppers we spoke with couldn't agree more.

“I just saw a Simon's re-do in Minneapolis and it was beautiful so I figure this will be great too," said Sioux Falls resident, Helen Dice.

Some of the biggest changes include the mall's food court, which is expected to be completed sometime this summer. Also under construction is the center court of the mall, which has already been demolished to open up the sightlines and clear a space for a new event area.

“They have removed the entire structure from center court so all the businesses that were in center court have been relocated or no longer in the mall," said Morrison.

The mall may be closing a few stores, but they are making room for some new ones.

“We have Sephora which will be opening. May 10th will their grand opening. We also have Oakley that’s located across from Victoria's Secret. That will be coming this summer,” said Morrison.

It’s not just the inside of the mall that's getting some work done; the outside is getting a facelift too. However, even with all the construction, the mall will always have its doors open for its customers.

“The biggest thing to remember when you come out to the mall is at each entrance there will be a door that is open so always look, when you come to the mall and park, always look for the open sign, we'll have signage up," said Morrison.

“It's got a long ways to go, but it will look good I'm sure,” said Rice.

So far, six new stores are confirmed to be coming to the mall, including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Teavana and Victoria’s Secret PINK. More are expected to be announced later on this year.

The mall renovation is set to be complete by the 2013 holiday season.
