Puppies Used As Stress Relievers At SDSU

Bookmark and Share

Graduation season has arrived for college seniors around the area but before they get their degrees, they need to finish up those final exams. A stressful time for most students but to help make what can be a terrible week tolerable, The South Dakota State University Book store has brought in some furry stress relievers.

Not much can go wrong in a room full of puppies. And, that's the idea at SDSU as finals week comes to a close.

“Well, it's really difficult to get your bearings when you've got so many tests going on and you just kind of go crazy. Having the dogs here, it's just really relaxing to pet these cute little things,” said SDSU Sophomore, Katrina Ruff.

“This is our first time doing it.  Hopefully, we can do it again in the future,” said Stephen Brua, a marketing coordinator for SDSU.

The positives for students are pretty obvious.

“Animals are proven stress relievers. Just spending 10 minutes petting a cat or a dog can lower blood pressure and lower stress hormones,” said Maia Moore of the Brookings Region Humane Society.

“When I was in college, you could get very stressed out. So, it's just a great time. Animals have been proven to be a stress reliever,” said Brua.

But, these furry interactions can be great for the pups as well.

“It's good for the animals to get out and socialize with all sorts of different people, get exposed to different noises, places, everything,” said Moore.

As final week comes to end at SDSU these little stress relievers are still being helpful even after the tests.

One student got out of a final, walked up to us crying and we handed her an animal. She felt better when she left,” said Moore.

Turning frowns upside down with the wag of a tale and a few excited barks.
