Habitat For Humanity Breaks Ground For Homes

Bookmark and Share

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls has built over 100 homes since the organization began back in 1991. And on Monday the organization broke ground on two more houses the organization will be building in 2013.

With golden shovels in hand, volunteers, organizers with Habitat for Humanity and sponsors broke ground on two homes Monday.

“We are having a big ground breaking week for Habitat for Humanity of Sioux Falls. We are breaking ground on four new lots, for four new homes within the community over the summer, for four families to have a safe, stable decent home,” said Communications Relations Director for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls Niki Schillerstrom.

Schillerstrom said 77 families applied for the ten homes the organization will be building in 2013. One of those families is Daniel, his wife Mulu and their four children. Daniel is a refugee from Ethiopia and has been in South Dakota for seven years. For him and his family, being able be break ground on the lot where their new home’s foundation sits, means a new beginning.

“I'm very, very happy. I am looking forward to raising our kids in this new house. Habitat for Humanity gave us an opportunity to have it, and be able to raise my four children here,” said Daniel.

And for Schillerstrom, a simple shovel full of dirt means one more family in the Sioux Empire will soon be able to call a place of their own home.

“It's the first time that you have both the physical and human representation of this process. And it can be quite moving. It's a very symbolic day,” said Schillerstrom.

Families who receive homes from Habitat for Humanity have several requirements they must meet in order to get home. They must have a source of income to help buy some of the building supplies and they must also be able to pay their mortgage.
