Car Break-Ins On The Rise In Sioux Falls

Bookmark and Share

As the temperatures continue to rise, so do the car break-ins in the Sioux Empire. This weekend alone, the Sioux Falls Police Department says there were a half a dozen of them.

"We're seeing more and more cases," said Officer Sam Clemens.

Sioux Falls Police say many car break-ins happen when, say, someone goes for a walk in the park. They get back to their car, and whatever is left inside is gone.

"Probably just over the past two months, they've really started to take off," said Clemens.

Seven of them were reported to police, in no particular area, just this past weekend. Six involved unlocked cars. The other, the window was smashed, and personal items taken.

Clemens said, "Two of them were purses, some wallets, some prescription pills."

So, whether you're making a quick stop at the gas station, or taking a walk on the bike trails, make sure your car is locked. And, if you're going to risk leaving your belongings inside the car, the best place to put them is in the trunk.

"It's going to be a lot safer if it's out of sight, opposed to sitting on the floor or the front seat of a car," said Clemens.

Because police say in just of matter of seconds, it can happen to you.

Clemens said, "You can break a car window, get inside the car, take what property you want and then you're gone."

The cars that were broken into over the weekend were mainly at businesses or apartment complexes.

Police say unless someone witnesses a break-in, there's not a lot of follow-up they can do when something like this happens.
