Sioux Falls Celebrates 'Armed Forces Day'

Bookmark and Share

Like every third Saturday in May, all branches of the United States military stood up for "Armed Forces Day." Not only were our servicemen and women given awards, the Sioux Falls Municipal band played in their honor.

Then men and women of today's Armed Forces presented more than 100 American flags leading to the VA Health Care System. It's a symbol of freedom, freedom that veterans like Harvey DeGroot provided to his fellow Americans.

"I served in the United States Army and was assigned to the first cavalry division in my tour of duty in Korea," said DeGroot.

DeGroot and his wife Cathy say they are eternally grateful for the day. A day to pause to reflect, a day to say thank you to those who sacrificed so much.

"We are grateful that the program was put together and it is done each year and that the band is willing to be out. It's a tribute and we gladly receive it," said DeGroot.

Across the way is a service man that represents a younger generation. Nineteen year old Jeff Nixon is a naval reservist looking to follow in his grandpa's footsteps.

"My grandfather was a naval chief. He was a machinist mate on the four star of the Vietnam War. It makes me very proud to say he has done that and everybody else who has done that and I will someday be a part of that," said Nixon.

Though he hasn't yet been deployed, he is eager to serve if called upon.

"It's a real honor because to be a part of the Armed Forces and to be a part of everybody who has served before. Also, to know I am serving and I have the potential to do something very great someday and to protect this great country," said Jeff Nixon.
