Local Organization Helps In Dog Fighting Cases

Bookmark and Share

The Sioux Empire Pit Rescue makes it their mission to help Pit Bulls in need and often times that means rescuing and rehabilitating them. Currently, their volunteers are helping provide care for 100 dogs that were seized in a dog fighting investigation in Missouri, Kansas and Texas in late March. But it's just one of many cases they've been a part of.

Meet Shay. Judging by her teeth, the Sioux Empire Pit Rescue thinks she's about 1-and-a-half or 2 years old. She's healthy and happy. Her only downfall, she still thinks she's a puppy.

Harold Podhradsky, who fosters Shay, said, "The one thing about Shay is she like to put her mouth on things."

It's a far cry from where she was just six months ago. She was one of 65 dogs that were given no food or water, tied up on chains in a backyard in Tennessee. Once, part of a dog fighting ring.

Podhradsky said, "See all of the marks down here and here and back there. She was what you call a bait dog, they would tape her mouth shut and let other dogs attack her."

Since, Sioux Empire Pit Rescue has taken her in, where volunteers like Podhradsky train her how to be a dog, but most importantly, provide her with a little TLC.

"To see the photos of them then and to see photos of them now, it's really incredible and that's why we foster, that's why we rescue," said Brittany Snyders, a Sioux Empire Pit Rescue Board member.

Found in the same backyard as Shay, Maverick has also been through an amazing transformation.

Stephanie Kennerly, who foster Maverick said, "He has learned to go up and down the stairs in the house and outside which was a big ordeal and he learned to sit and wait for his food instead of gobbling it up because he knows he's going to be fed eventually again."

Kennerly describes Mav as nothing short of calm, cool and collected. Once beaten and malnourished, you would never be able to guess, the torture he's been through.

"We get to fix them, and it's an easy fix. All they need is love," said Podhradsky.

Currently, Sioux Empire Pit Rescue is looking to adopt out 20 or so Pit Bulls to loving homes, including Shay and Maverick. Before the dogs are adopted out the temporary owners train them and care for them. The dogs are only matched with homes that the organization believes they will fit in well with.
