Girls Run To Raise Awareness

Bookmark and Share

A group of runners from St. Cloud State University are lacing up their running shoes to raise awareness about human trafficking. But it’s no five mile run, as the women began their trek across the state of Minnesota.

It’s estimated that over 11,000 women and children are the victims of human trafficking in Minnesota. When the women heard that statistic, they decided to help bring awareness to the problem.
Five seniors from St. Cloud State University are gearing up for the run of their lives, to help save lives.

For 14 days, the women will run from Dawson to Stillwater, Minn. to raise awareness for human trafficking.

"It's something I feel is hard for me to do, but I know it isn't as hard as what these victims are facing today,” said Kate Rabago.

Rabago said the group heard about the global problem one night at their Chi Alpha bible study when speakers from Venture Expeditions spoke about it. Rabago said after they learned there are nearly 30 million victims of human trafficking worldwide, they decided they needed to find their own way to help.

“And from there we did our own research,” said Rabago. “Then we partnered with a group of students from St. Cloud State called 'Students Against Human Trafficking,' or STATS.”

With the help of Venture Expeditions, these women are running 200 miles across the state to help those affected by human trafficking in Southeast Asia. For them, their biggest challenge isn't where they are going to stay while on their 16 day adventure, it's how they are going to manage it. Courtney Passa said none of them are runners.

“The most, most of us have run before this was six miles,” said Passa.

But on Sunday they beat their old distances and ran 8 miles. And on Monday, they try for 15 more from Dawson to Montevideo, officially kicking off their journey.

And although they are already sunburnt, tired, and sore, they know it’s all for a good cause.

“It's just a good way to help out other communities,” said Passa.

Even more importantly, they remember their mission is to help save others so they don't have to suffer.

“What we are doing is the prevention aspect of it,” Rabago said. “So that includes meals, education and healthcare.”

Each of the women had to raise $2,600 in order to participate. That money, as well as the money raised from the run, will go to missionaries on the Thai-Burma border. There, they feed and educate those who are at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking.
