Ortonville Building Takes Brunt Of Storm

Bookmark and Share

A look at the facade of one building in Downtown Ortonville and someone may think nothing is wrong. But, a quick look around back and the wrath of Friday night’s severe weather becomes easy to see.

The roofless building held 10 businesses, one of which just opened last week. According to the building’s owner those who worked there were in the building when it started to blow away.

But, after seeking shelter from the storm in the basement, those workers were more concerned with flooding.

“They did not know. They said it was noisy and the water just started pouring in. They tried putting water in the buckets but it was not worth it,” said Jim Kaye, the building’s owner.

Glass still sits on neighboring sidewalks after a rooftops violent ride.

“The roof was on the building across the street from it but most of it flipped over on the other one,” said Kaye.

The structure built in 1919 is easy to pick out. And the building’s owner thought it would be able to make it through the storm.

“It's an historic building. It's a beautiful building. It was the one I didn't think anything would ever happen to it,” said Kaye.

The damage In Downtown Ortonville has become a spectacle.  But, the city's neighborhoods are also dealing with damage.

“Something I've never really experienced before,” said Kaye.

This RV took the brunt of a fallen tree and sidewalks are forced skyward from rising roots.

Most of the damage is east of downtown, a downtown that may never look the same.

“It's kind of a weird feeling. You kind of go up there and it’s disbelief, really. I don't think it really hits you until the day after,” said Kaye.

“I'm expecting it’s not going to be salvageable. They're two buildings and I'm guessing they're both going to be gone,” added Kaye.
