SD Officials Pleased With Ruling On Voting Rights

Bookmark and Share

South Dakota officials say they are pleased with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a federal law requiring federal approval of state and local laws that might restrict the voting rights of minorities.

The Supreme Court says the law cannot be enforced unless Congress comes up with a new formula for determining which areas must seek federal approval for election changes.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says racial discrimination cannot be tolerated, but he says federal intrusion into state affairs also is not acceptable.

The American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota says it's disappointed with the ruling because it could hurt voting rights for Native Americans.

The law specifically lists the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian reservations as places where voting changes must be approved by federal officials.
