Timber Strike Drop-Off Sites Begin Closing

Bookmark and Share

The Fourth of July is a holiday to celebrate our independence, enjoy fireworks with the family, and soak in the summer heat, but in the beginning of July, it's an ice storm that the city of Sioux Falls is talking about.

The contract issued by the city's public works department to arborists that helped trees recover from the early April storm has officially come to an end.  The arborists were instrumental in helping the city quickly remove limbs and branches, and cut down possible hazardous trees.  Lance Weatherly, with the Sioux Falls Public Works Department, on the current drop-off sites, “Grinding is ongoing at the 69th and Cliff site, the city plans on closing the site this Sunday at 7 p.m."

While the public works department says you can call anytime about an issue with a tree or branch, they do want to remind people that a sick or dying tree can be caused by something other than April’s storm.  Lance added, “We continue to take calls from homeowners who have questions with their trees, a lot of these calls are trees that have had pre-existing conditions prior to the ice storm”.

For those who have had trees removed and still have a stump, the city says wait on removing them.
Mark Cotter, the Sioux Falls Public Works Director says removal could be free of charge, and that contractors are being sought, “With just over 950 trees, we do expect to issue that contract in the very near future”

The contract with the arborists may be over, but the city still has work ahead of them cleaning up from the April ice storm.  They still are occupied trying to clear out the Big Sioux River and the local drainage areas.

The Sioux Falls regional landfill will continue to take branches, however starting July eighth, and normal drop-off charges will apply.  Those costs are $2 per car, $5 per pickup, or $10 per ton.  They are open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
