Palisades State Park has 34 campsites, six cabins and a group lodge. With a park full of eager campers, each one has a different reason to celebrate the holiday.
It's a good time to be with family and just to count your blessings and know that freedom isn't free," said camper LaRae Gieski.
For some people, like LaRae Gieski, Independence Day is more than just a long holiday weekend.
“Enough people paid a big price so that we could have our freedom and so this holiday is sacred to us, we really enjoy it," said Gieski.
Gieski and her husband moved back to Sioux Falls after being stationed in Georgia for four years with the military.
Her husband Greg served in Iraq. Being back home is something special to their family.
"We are kind of doing the traditional American thing. That would be s'mores, campfires and hotdogs," said Getski.
Other families have the same idea. Palisades State Park is filling up quickly. Cody Norris is also camping with his family. Although he's never been camping over the holiday, he says he's enjoying his stay.
"We went on some trails and went hiking and all of that,” said camper Cody Norris.
After throwing around the football by the campfire, he plans to try his luck fishing
"We saw some people catching bass and catfish. Hopefully we can catch some, said Norris.
With a full park expected on the Fourth of July, park managers have been busy preparing for the weekend.
"We had to start a little earlier, get things done a little sooner, get contractors in to do a few things earlier in the week," said Palisades District Supervisor, Travis Theilen>
Palisades State Park is now ready for a full weekend of camping and family fun.
"We are enjoying the scenery and nice weather. It's just kind of picture perfect right now for the Fourth," Gieski said.
