Storms Rattle Todd County Communities

Bookmark and Share

Last night around 8:00 p.m., radars were picking up on some strong storms pushing to the south east through Millette county and into Todd county.  A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect, as the evening was drawing to a close.

That's when things began to go from bad to worse.  The Rosebud Tribal Liaison, Don Leader Charge, discussed the damage that followed.  "The storm came sweeping through, the hail storm, the wind storm.  It came over Rosebud and I think the brunt of it hit the Two Strike community which is located 4 or 5 miles south of Rosebud here."

The rain was torrential, the hail was huge, and the winds were whipping.  "Broken windows, broken windshields, and things were just blown and strewn about.  Screen doors were taken off and so on, and power lines were down."  The rainfall in some Todd county locations is estimated at around two inches.  Dams were pushed to their limits, with streams backing up from the flash flooding.

"Some of the dams here were overflowing their banks; the Rosebud dam here right down the hill here was overflowing its banks and but Rosebud valley in danger of being washed out."  Some roads were closed, because they were deemed unsafe with water free flowing over the surface.  "The Ghost Hawk dam there, we have a civil engineer who's going to be assessing that dam to see if it’s safe to open that road again."

Although no injuries have been reported, the communities are still trying to deal with the damage and get the power back on.  Area leaders have made calls for assistance.  "We've made calls to senator Thune's office and senators Johnson's office seeking some assistance from them for whatever they can assist us with."

A tribal liason from FEMA has traveled to the Rosebud Indian Reservation and is providing technical assistance.
