Carnival Workers Busted For Cocaine

Bookmark and Share

Sioux Falls Police say two men who are carnival workers at the Sioux Empire Fair were arrested after crack cocaine was shipped to them.

Police say they recieved a tip from a police agency in Pearland, Texas on Saturday that a suspicious package was being shipped to Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force tracked the package that was being sent to a local hotel in Southwest Sioux Falls. Before it arrived, they intercepted the package and an undercover cop delivered the package to the hotel.

Police say 35-year-old Louis Frank Deak of Lawton, Oklahoma picked up the package. Inside the package, police found 37 grams of crack cocaine inside the head of a doll. Deak told police he was picking up the package for another man who he owed money to but didn't know what was inside.

Police contacted the other man, 55-year-old John Thomas Whitfield Jr. of Houston, Tex. Marijuana was found inside the truck he was staying in at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds.

Deak was arrested for distribution of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

Whitfield was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession with the intent to distribute and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

Both Deak and Whitfield were working at the fairgrounds but were not employees of the Sioux Empire Fair. They work for Murphy Brother Exposition, the carnival that comes to the fair.  They are expected to appear in court on Monday.
