Downtown Sioux Falls Appeals To Businesses

Bookmark and Share

Downtown Sioux Falls is the place to be. That's according to two restaurants setting up shop there.

Coffea's on Phillips Avenue held its grand opening Friday, and Queen City Bakery will open Saturday.

So what's the appeal of bringing your business downtown? KDLT went to find out.

Lines were forming and coffee was brewing Friday morning at Coffea on Phillips Avenue.

"The line was out the door before we even opened,” said Jennifer Swanson

The center of downtown is the second location for the coffee shop.

“We’re really excited to have a place in the heart of Sioux where we can really jump in and have an atmosphere like this that's warm and inviting,” said Swanson.

While parking may be a bigger issue at this location than their other on Louise Avenue, Jennifer Swanson, CEO of Coffea, says having a business downtown does have its perks.

"At our other location, the rent is probably about 5x the cost,” said Swanson. Swanson says Not only is having a business downtown affordable, the atmosphere is perfect for a coffee shop.

“A new culture is forming down here. A real vibrancy. A collective community. This desire for a community is growing so much,” said Swanson

Just down the street... Mitch Jackson and his wife are busy getting ready to open up Queen City Bakery; new location a stone's throw away from their old one.

"Block and half...not even,” said Jackson.

And while it may just be a brisk walk, according to Jackson, being just ahead of the train tracks makes all the difference.

"We had a lot of traffic in the morning from 7-8:30 but once work started it was tough for people to get back not knowing what the train schedule was,” said Jackson

Though the bakery looked at other locations that would meet their needs for more seating and a bigger kitchen, nothing compared to the price and feel of downtown Sioux Falls.

"There’s a lot more move downtown because of the historic feel, there’s lots of foot traffic, there's more people sitting out and being downtown and that helps drive that traffic into their business,” said Jackson.

“It's definitely well worth the price of being down here,” said Jackson.

Making Downtown the ideal spot to be for these two businesses.

Queen City Bakery opens at 7:00 a.m. Saturday. They are located right across from 8th and Railroad.

Another new addition to downtown is "Five Guys Burgers and Fries" on Minnesota Avenue. They're set to open August 19.
