VERMILLION, S.D.—Rebecca Sparkman gave South Dakota a 1-0 lead in the first half and Tricia Stonebraker netted the equalizer for Loyola with 10 minutes to go in regulation as the two teams dueled to a 1-1 tie Friday at USD Soccer Complex.
It was the season opener for both teams. The Coyotes and Ramblers also competed to a 1-1 tie last season in Chicago.
Sparkman, a sophomore, netted her second collegiate goal off a corner kick from teammate Teagan Eberle in the 32nd minute. Eberle found Sparkman in the middle of the box and Sparkman split the center of the goal for the score.
The Sparkman-Eberle duo nearly connected again 12 minutes into the second half. Eberle centered a pass to Sparkman who was streaking down the middle of the field. Sparkman fired from just outside the box and drilled the top of the cross bar. The ball deflected over the net for a goal kick.
Stonebreaker’s score followed a series of near misses for the senior from Alaska. Stonebreaker had a bicycle kick miss just to the left four minutes into the second half. She sent another ball wide right with 28 minutes to go. The shot that connected was sent in from the left side by Monika Lee who played to an open Stonebreaker on the right side of the box and then fired into the back of the net.
Loyola took the only three shots of the two overtime periods. The teams combined to put seven of 30 shots on goal.
The Coyotes return to their home pitch Sunday for a 1 p.m. match with the Iowa State Cyclones.
