Rodeo Helps Troubled Youth

Bookmark and Share

It was a night full of barrel racing and bull riding, but it wasn't your average rodeo. Located at the The McCrossan Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls, the rodeo was put on to help troubled boys in the community who live on the ranch.

As the horses got ready to step into the ring, people were starting to pile into the stands. It’s for the 7th annual McCrossan Boys Ranch Extreme Event challenge Beauty and the Beast event was underway Saturday night.

An event raising money for the 70 teenage boys who live on the ranch, teens like Edward.

"It's definitely pretty fun. It's not every day on Saturday that at this time to get to do some stuff you know so seeing everyone and the public is enjoyable," said Edward S.

The rodeo may seem like entertainment to the rest of the crowd, but to Edward and the other residents at McCrossan, it hits closer to home. Living on the ranch, he's able to take care of his own horse and ride frequently, a safe and healthy activity. He was even able to compete at competitions

"I used to do 4H for the horses and I actually got reserve champion from Huron," said Edward.

So watching the pros in the ring is special to him, those he and the other boys can look up to.

"I like watching the bull riders and watching them trying to stay on," said Edward.

And one of those role models is beneath makeup and overalls,

"The kids at the ranch have hope for a new beginning. If I can be a role model, there's teaching moments where I try to be a good teacher," said World Champion Bull Fighter, Jerry Norton.

World Champion Bull Fighter, Jerry Norton traveled to Sioux Falls to be part of the show. He says part of being a world champion is being able to share it with South Dakota and its youth.

"They're all a bunch of good kids," said Norton.

Saturday’s event was $12 dollars for adults and $5 for children, with the proceeds going to the McCrossan Boys' Ranch. The event is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year. The boys who live at McCrossan Boys Ranch attend school on campus at the ranch and can receive
