A potential measure that failed in the 2013 South Dakota Legislative Session has got people talking again. The initiated measure would require health insurers to include all willing and qualified health providers, on their provider lists.
The initiated measure means that all health insurers would have to list the health care providers that they will cover. Some think that will save money and help people maximize their plan coverage, while others disagree.
The group 'Patient Choice for South Dakota' is petitioning the measure. They believe people should be able to go to any hospital, practice, or private doctor they want. The initiated measure did say that not all health insurers would have to follow this if adopted. Certain plans that have specified diseases, Medicare, disability, among others could continue the way they are.
Mike Myers, who is the independent candidate for the 2014 governor’s race said he backs this petition. Myers believes it is important people have the power of who takes care of them.
“This is going to go, and I believe it will be welcomed and South Dakota will be unique,” said Myers.
The group needs to get over 15,000 signatures by Nov. 4.
If the group does receive enough signatures on their petition the measure would be on the November 2014 ballot.
