SF Marathon Tightens Security

Bookmark and Share

Twenty-six hundred runners laced up their tennis shoes to run in this year's Sioux Falls Marathon, half marathon and 5K races. Since the number of participants continues to grow each year. Not only was there extra staff on-site, but extra security as well.

Because of the previous events that happened at the Boston Marathon months ago, coordinators with the Sioux Falls marathon though it would be a good idea to take extra precautions this year. They had 12,000 volunteers as well as police at various locations throughout the races.

Countless hours have been spent planning and preparing for one of the biggest races in Sioux Falls.

"We prep about 9 months out of the year for this event," said Sioux Falls Marathon Event Coordinator Kim Goetsch.

Only this year, some extra time and planning was put into tightening the security to make sure everyone from the fans, runners and volunteers are safe. At the finish line, all volunteers are required to wear ID tags.

"To get to the finish line, you can't just walk into the finish line, everybody has IDs with a badge," said Goetsch.

And a number of bright yellow signs are sprinkled all around the finish line, forbidding the very thing bombs were carried in during the Boston marathon. Something event planners are not taking lightly.

"You never know what happens. Unfortunately we live in that day and age where you can't take things for granted like we used to," said Goetsch.

But the biggest change is the secret security cameras. Two of them were hidden on top of buildings around the park and monitored by the police. They are so small, people aren't able to see them.

"We have different cameras mounted so the police command center can view the whole finish line and see what's happening," said Goetsch.

It's extra precautions that had to be made, to make sure everyone has a safe trip all the way up to the finish line.

The heat was also a concern as the morning went on. A crew was following the runners and restocking water. Every single water station included medical staff.
