Mitchell Woman Dies From Injuries Received In Crash

A Mitchell woman has died from injuries she received during a two vehicle crash near Plankinton on September 5th.

78-year-old Shirley Marken of Mitchell was the passenger in a 2002 Chevy Impala driven by 79-year-old Richard Marken of Mitchell. The Impala was traveling westbound on Old Highway 16 and approaching the intersection with U.S. Highway 281 east of Plankinton. After making the required stop, Marken drove into the intersection in front of a southbound 2006 International 9400i Eagle Semi-Truck driven by 33-year-old Jacob Sawatzky of Rosenfield, Manitoba, Canada; a collision occurred.

During the crash, Shirley Marken received life threatening injuries and was transported to Queen of Peace hospital in Mitchell before being air lifted to Avera McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls. She died on September 16th, from injuries sustained in the crash. Richard Marken received minor injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts during the crash.

Sawatzky was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
