City Gives $240,000 Incentive To Company

Bookmark and Share

Contractors working on the intersection of 57th Street and Western Avenue picked up a bonus check for nearly $240,000 Thursday. The project is almost finished, and it’s 6 weeks earlier than expected.

It's a construction project that began in late April, but with an incentive in place, it’s done early.

"When we open up this traffic it makes it safer and easier. It actually draws people to this area," said Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether.

The city of Sioux Falls says they see up to 36,000 cars on the intersection of 57th Street and Western Avenue so making sure the construction process is done early is a must.

"You hope for nice weather, like said we got the nice weather. You work more hours, you just catch up,” said D&G Concrete Construction Contractor, Greg Branaugh.

As a result, the staff at D & G Concrete Construction worked long hours to make sure they were on track. They worked 7 days a week, but there’s still a little more work to do.

"There's traffic loop wire that need to be repaired and a couple signs that need to be put up yet," said city of Sioux Falls Engineer, Brad Ludens.

Even though traffic is moving, the traffic lanes may be closed down once again. The city says they will work around rush hour.

"Any closers will be completed roughly 8:30 a.m.  in the morning and 4 p.m. at night,” said Ludens.

City Officials look at several factors when deciding whether or not to offer incentives. It depends on proximity to businesses, traffic and whether it’s a high pedestrian area.

If contractors didn’t finish before the October deadline, they would face a ‘damage’ charge of $4,000 a day.

In 2010, the City of Sioux Falls granted a half-million dollar incentive to contractors working on the 41st Street Bridge project.
