Wearing Gold For Child Cancer

Bookmark and Share

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in The United States. In fact, one to two children out of every 10,000 will develop the disease each year. But thanks to a special event Saturday, a young Sioux Falls boy living with cancer, was able to forget about his disease for a day.

When you talk to 9-year-old Jaykob Knutson, he seems like any other 4th grader.

"I want to be an engineer and then either play baseball or football," said Jaykob Knutson.

But his life is much different than most others his age. Last April, Jaykob learned he was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Spending most of his time at the hospital, Jaykob has already undergone chemotherapy, and has to go through even more treatment over the next three years.

"Treatment is going well. Obviously there's good days and bad days. He’s going through kind of a rough route," said Jaykob’s mother, Amy Knutson.

But on Saturday Jaykob and his family were able to put the thought of his illness aside, as they stood on the sidelines watching one of his favorite teams take the field.

"It's really cool seeing the players close up," said Jaykob Knutson.

The opportunity was all thanks to 'Be Bold, Wear Gold,’ a campaign that raises awareness for childhood cancer. On Saturday, Augustana fans and staff sported the color in the stands.

"We are really blessed with a lot of friends and family that has been supporting us but when you have a whole community supporting you, it makes it all that much more special," said Amy Knutson.

But Jakob was able to do more than just stand on the sidelines. In front of hundreds, he was able to walk out on the field next to the captains and help with the coin toss.

"For him to be asked to do this, he was very excited. It kind of gives him something positive to look forward to underneath his treatment," said Amy Knutson.

The month of September is known as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Sanford Health and Children’s Miracle Network are partners for ‘Be Bold, Wear Gold.’
