Cougars rally at Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (October 3, 2013) – The Sioux Falls volleyball team was fueled by the revenge factor Thursday night in Jamestown.

The Cougars (9-5, 1-4 NSIC) erased a 2-0 deficit and stunned Jamestown College in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-8).

It was a switch from last year when the Jimmies (15-6), who received seven votes in this week’s Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, rallied from two sets down to hand the Cougars their lone non-conference loss of the season.

Junior Emily Johnson paced the Cougars, as has been the trend for the entire 2013 season. The Platte-Geddes native floored a match-best 23 kills and finished with a .289 attack percentage. Johnson did a little bit of everything, also chipping in seven digs and serving up three aces.

She had plenty of help, too, as Kate Hart just missed her first career double-double, putting up 12 kills to go with her fine defense of nine digs. Michelle Ritland added 10 kills while Jordan Calef had six and Samantha Lovell posted five terminations.

Senior setter Alexa Reed was as versatile as ever, managing a match-high 45 assists, to go with 17 digs and putting down four kills on a .300 attack clip. Andrea Odbert dug out 17 Jimmies’ attacks and Becky Wessel had seven digs and served up a pair of aces.

As a team, the Cougars hit .228 for the match —better than the Jimmies’ clip of .212. —but were out-blocked for the third straight match, 13 to 5. USF out-dug Jamestown 70-48 and also held a 53-38 advantage in set assists.

USF steps back into NSIC play tomorrow with a 7 p.m. match at Minot State (6-8, 2-3 NSIC).
