Blowing Snow Closes I-90 at Murdo

Bookmark and Share

South Dakota officials closed Interstate 90 between Exit 191 at Murdo west to the Wyoming border. This portion of the interstate will remain closed until storm conditions improve and crews are able to clear the roadway of snow and ice. The picture shows I-90 near Wall.

•    The strong early-fall storm will continue to impact western South Dakota with heavy snow and strong winds through Friday night and into the daytime hours on Saturday.
•    Further closures on the interstate system could be necessary if conditions deteriorate east of Wall.
•    Conditions will continue to deteriorate on virtually all roads in western South Dakota through the evening and nighttime hours Friday. Motorists should be aware that travel is extremely difficult and in many cases impossible.
•    Steady rain has been impacting much of South Dakota west of the Missouri River during the afternoon Friday. The line at which the rain changes over to snow is a narrow one with this storm. Travelers might find that in the space of a very few miles, they go from driving in rain to encountering heavy snow accompanied by strong winds. Officials recommend travelers consider delaying trips until the storm has passed if at all possible.
•    Many roads in the Black Hills already are nearly impassable. As storm conditions force maintenance crews off the highways, travel will become impossible in those areas. In addition, downed trees and power lines in some areas of the Black Hills are creating additional hazards for travelers.

Officials with the departments of Transportation and Public Safety in South Dakota also caution travelers that the heavy snow and strong winds carried by this storm will move eastward through the overnight hours.

Travelers are urged to visit safetravelusa.com/SD or to call 511 to check road conditions in other parts of South Dakota.
