DSU Trojans Fall To Valley City State

MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) outhit Dakota State (S.D.) 62-47 to earn a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-22) North Star Athletic Association conference victory Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State lost their fifth straight match and dipped their overall record to 5-18. Valley City State improved their record to 11-17. Both teams are tied for third in the NSAA Volleyball conference standing with a 2-3 record.

Trailing 17-12 in the opening set, Dakota State roared back by scoring seven straight points to earn a 19-17 lead. From there, the Vikings answered back by outscoring the Trojans 7-1 to earn a 24-20 lead. DSU scored three straight points (kill by Caitlin Pick and two straight attack errors by VCSU) to cut their deficit to 24-23 before VCSU called a time out.

An attack error by the Trojans gave VCSU a 1-0 match lead by winning the first set by the score of 25-23.

Valley City State held a 13-12 lead in the second set before the Trojans made a scoring run. DSU outscored the Vikings 10-4 to earn the second set's biggest lead at 22-15. The Vikings could get no closer than four points on two occasions (23-19 and 24-20) as DSU secured the second set 25-20 and even the match at 1-1. VCSU had 16 hits in the second set, but the Trojans had a better hitting percentage (.316 – 15 kills with 3 errors in 38 attempts) than the Vikings (.227 – six errors in 44 attempts).

The second set featured 19 ties and five lead changes.

As the Trojans were behind at 17-15 in the third set, DSU went on a 5-0 scoring spurt to earn a 20-17 lead. The Vikings rallied back by outscoring DSU 8-1 to claim the third set by the score of 25-21 to extend VCSU's match lead to 2-1. Both teams struggled as they hit below .100. VCSU had 15 kills, but committed 11 errors in 44 attempts (.091) compared to DSU 8 kills with 7 errors in 42 attempts (.042).

The Vikings and Trojans battled through the fourth set with 27 ties and six lead changes. At 21-21, VCSU sealed the match by using a 4-1 scoring run to win by the score of 25-22. Valley City State hit .324 (17 kills with 5 errors in 37 attempts) while DSU hit .222 (12 kills with 4 errors in 36 attempts).

A total of 66 ties and 19 lead changes were recorded in the match.

DSU's Caitlin Pick and Brittney Anderson each recorded double digits in kills for the third straight match. Pick led the Trojans' offense attack with 16 kills. She hit .351 in the match. Anderson added 10 kills. Tessa Weeldreyer had six kills. Haley Hillestad had five kills. Stacey Schuller had a double-double of 18 set assists and 11 digs. Kaylee Vander Wal had 13 assists.

Katherine Gonzalez recorded a match-high 26 digs for the Trojans. Kelci Viesselman, Taylor Stratton, Schuller and Jessica McKenney each had a service ace.

Hillestad had four block assists (2 total blocks) for DSU. Pick, Vieeselman and Michele Rogers each added two block assists.

Aurissa Martens smashed a match-high 22 kills with a hitting percentage of .327 for the Vikings. Alley Theroux added 12 kills (.360 hitting percdentage). Kaitlyn Heuring had nine kills and three block assists (1.5 total blocks). Stephanie Miller and Megan Good each had 26 assists.

Good had 12 digs and five service aces for VCSU. Emily Plowman had 21 digs.

The Vikings hit .193 (62 kills with 29 errors in 171 attempts) compared to the Trojans' .177 (47 kills with 19 errors in 158 attempts).

VCSU had nine service aces while DSU had four service aces.

The Vikings had 78 digs compared to the Trojans' 72 digs.

DSU had seven blocks in the match. VCSU recorded four blocks.

Dakota State continues their NSAA conference action on the road with a pair of matches in North Dakota. First stop is on Friday night as the Trojans visit Mayville State (N.D.) at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. There will be a junior varsity match at 5 p.m. with the varsity match to follow at 7 p.m
