SF Officer Shoots, Kills Man

Bookmark and Share

A 22-year-old man is dead after being shot at least two times by an officer with the Sioux Falls Police Department.

Police say they were called to the 6600 block of West 15th Place in Sioux Falls at around 5:00 p.m. for a report of a man threatening to kill himself with a gun.

Before police arrived, one shot had already been fired. The SWAT team was eventually called to the scene. They set up a perimeter and officers were negotiating with the man. Police say at one point, another shot was fired by the man.

Sioux Falls Police Department Chief Doug Barthel said, "After making contact a few times, the subject then came out at the residence and pointed a rifle at the officers on the scene. As soon as that happened one of our SWAT officers shot him."

Police say the officer shot the man at least two times. He was pronounced dead and taken away in an ambulance. He name isn't being released until family members are notified.

The Sioux Falls Police Department will have an outside agency conduct an investigation. As procedure, the officer involved will be put on paid administrative leave.
