If you find yourself frustrated while waiting at a traffic light late at night and there are no other cars coming, that’s about to change. City leaders announced Thursday that 64 additional traffic signals will start flashing red or yellow after 11 p.m.
Throughout the city of Sioux Falls there are 250 traffic signals. Up until Thursday, a little over half of them flashed at night. Now, 81 percent of the city’s lights will be signaling drivers to either stop or yield. City leaders said the goal is to ‘keep Sioux Falls moving.’
"Right now a lot of our lights go into flashing at 11 p.m., a lot of the signals are going to go into flash at 10 p.m. starting Thursday night too,” said Heath Hoftiezer, Sioux Falls Principal Traffic Engineer.
There are 47 traffic signals that won’t be changing. Those will remain the same due to visibility concerns and lane geometry.
