Snow Alerts Now Available Via Text

Bookmark and Share

With winter right around the corner, the city of Sioux Falls has decided to implement new technology to help residents when it comes to clearing the roads.  The city took some time during the warmer months to engineer a system that will send out snow alert text messages to everyone that is signed up in their database.

"You can’t believe the number of times over the last three years I have people call and said, you know what, I don't live on my computer, but my phone is always with me, no matter where I’m at,” said Galynn Huber, the Street and Fleet Operations Manager.

Anytime we have a good snowfall, some people do get confused on whether or not they have to move their car.  By texting the word “SNOW” to the city, they'll send you news and notifications if a Snow Alert has been issued.

It's free, easy to sign up, and it will let you know if you need to move your vehicle for the plows.  There is no magic snowfall amount for a snow alert to be issued, that decision is based on the type of precipitation.

Huber is clearing up some of the confusion, "We may call a snow alert right at two inches with one snow storm because its really  wet and heavy and we can’t get it off the streets and its starting to glaze up and get really icy, or i may call it at three inches when its really light and powdery.

The city also wants you to know, that residents who don't shovel their own sidewalks within 48 hours of a snowfall, may find a green ticket hanging from your doorknob.  Kevin Smith, the Assistant Director of Planning and Building Services, says that people will definitely get the message.  ‘We’ll come back in 24 hours and if it’s not done, you will receive a $100 citation and we’ll have the work done by an independent contractor, and you’re going to be assessed for those costs too.”

The city says that during the winter, everyone must work together if the city is to operate smoothly.  To subscribe to the system, all you  have to do is send a text with the word "SNOW" to 605-413-1990 or you can sign up by logging onto www.siouxfalls.org/snow.
