Fraternity Gets New Home After Fire

Bookmark and Share

One fraternity at South Dakota State University has a new place to call home. A fire destroyed the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house. But now, around three years later, they've rebuilt.

Back in 2010, an electrical fire burned down the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house,
leaving many of its members without a home.

"People lived in resident halls or off campus. There wasn't a good, central location," said Sigma Alpha Epsilon president Spencer Schreier.

But now, the boys have a new home. It’s all thanks to South Dakota State University, lots of fundraising and help from alums.

"That's the great thing about a fraternity is once you're a member, you're a member for life," said Schreier.

They broke ground on Hobo Day in 2012 and it took less than a year for the three-story house to be completed,

"It really brings the house back together, lots of more involvement," said Schreier.

Even though the house looks shiny and new, some of the old pieces of the house are hidden from wall to wall, even the wood framework above the fireplace.

"Here are the top two layers of bricks that are from an old fireplace.. the coat of army, you can see a lot of smoke damage that's in it,” said Schreier.

"We haven't had a location for the past couple of years and now it's just incredible," said Schreier.

They have 25 active members. The new location can house up to 18.
