SECT Presents: "To Kill A Mockingbird"

It's a classic story by Harper Lee, set in the south in the 1930s of a white lawyer defending a black man accused of raping a young, white woman. Now this classic tale, is coming to the Orpheum Stage being performed by the Sioux Empire Community Theater.


Amanda Pitzer and Sue Martins, actors in the play, joined Phil and Laura Thrusday to tell us more about this production that starts Friday night.

The first show on the Sioux Empire Community Theatre's main stage this season will be the award-winning play To Kill a Mockingbird, a classic story adapted by Christopher Sergel from the novel by Harper Lee.

Set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression, To Kill A Mockingbird tells the coming-of-age story of "Scout" Finch.  The plot follows Scout's childhood adventures with her brother Jem and their friend, Dill. The story arc peaks when Scout's father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, agrees to defend an African American man accused of raping a white woman. To Kill A Mockingbird examines racial inequality in the South during the mid-1930s.

Leading the production of To Kill A Mockingbird is Director Eric Hagen. Hagen recently retired as a professor and chair of the theatre department at USD. This is not Hagen's first involvement with the community theatre, as he has director credit for the past Sioux Falls Community Playhouse productions of I Hate Hamlet and The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

To Kill a Mockingbird premieres at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls. The production will run Nov. 8 through November 17 with evening performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and matinee performances on Sundays at 2 p.m. in the Orpheum Theatre.  Tickets can be purchased online at siouxfallstheatre.com or by calling 605-360-4800. The box office will be open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. through the run of the show.
