Life With Laura: Super Sweet Zumbathon

Bookmark and Share

Zumba enthusiasts are coming together not only to burn calories, but to raise money for a good cause.

90 minutes may not seem like a very long time, but in 90 minutes on Thursday night at the District in Sioux Falls, you can learn a few new moves and help find a cure for diabetes.

A Latin-inspired workout set in a club like atmosphere, Zumba is changing the way people across the country look at working out.
"It's not your typical you're running on a treadmill. You are dancing and you are shaking and you are smiling and you are laughing" said Zumba Fitness Instructor, Dawn Szymik. “It's a calorie burning, exhilarating party. It's a party!”

A special Zumba class in Sioux Falls, The Super Sweet Zumbathon, isn't just encouraging people to get up and move, it’s helping make a difference in the life of children battling diabetes.
5-year-old River McKenzie was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which means his body doesn't produce insulin.
“Shortly after he was diagnosed we switched him to a pump so he can have snacks and eat birthday cake. We just need to know how many carbohydrates are in his food so we can dose the insulin so we can keep his blood sugar stable," said River’s mother, Bethany McKenzie.

River and his mother, Bethany, have decided to pour their passion into positive projects to spread awareness and raise money and the Super Sweet Zumbathon is one of them.

“He's so brave and confident and he doesn't complain about it," said McKenzie. “So we just want to use his brave little spirit to hopefully reach out to other kids who might be struggling or parents who need some help with their child.”

“It's everywhere, so why not have this awesome cause and focus on getting healthy and taking one step towards finding a cure," said Szymik.

Doors open at 5:30 pm on Thursday and the event runs from 6-7:30 pm. Admission is $15 at the door and shirts will be sold for $20, with all proceeds going towards the American Diabetes Association
The District is also donating 5% of the food and drink sales from the day to the cause.

Starting Monday, Szymik will host an hour-long Zumba class at The District every Monday and Wednesday at 6 pm.
