Thousands Head To Dakota Dome

Eight total football games will be played in three days. It’s something that has never happened before at the USD Dakota Dome.

This year the South Dakota High School Activities Association added an extra High School Championship Football Game to the schedule. It’s the first time USD and SDSU are playing at the Dakota Dome as Division One teams.

The Dakota Dome is going to be a busy place over the next three days.

"This is the best place to be right now. There isn't any other place I would want to be right now," said fan Mike Schlachter.

But lots of planning was done to make sure the expected 40,000-50,000 fans could sit in these seats.

"We have been planning for months. We are ready for this. Our whole staff is on board," said USD Senior Associate Athletic Director, David Williams.

It's over 200 workers, a full staff ranging from facility coaches to volunteers working around the clock.

"Most of our facility staff is running on 16 hour days starting at 6 a.m. We will be going until 1 a.m. to be able to turn it off for the next day," said Williams.

But in the championship's 33 year history, this is the first time seven high school championship games will be played. It’s something staff says was not a huge headache to plan.

"When you're doing six or seven games what difference is it to add one more game,” said Williams.

"From day one, it's been significant thing to have here," said former mayor, Dan Christopherson.

In the early years of the high school championships, Dan Christopherson was the Executive Director for the Chamber of Commerce. He knows the impact and comradely the crowd brings to the town.

"It's been a really positive ride and its increased every year. I think the fans have looked forward to it more and more each year," said former mayor, Dan Christopherson.

Eight total games might be a lot of work, but cheering on a favorite team seems to be worth it.

"These are the busiest days of the year but they are the most fun," said Williams.

University of South Dakota Athletic Directors say their game with SDSU is already sold out at 10,000 people. They expect the Lincoln v. Roosevelt Game Saturday night to bring in 8,000-10,000 fans.
