Bosworth Land Raffle Being Questioned

Bookmark and Share

A raffle to raise money for troops has some buyers wondering if it’s a scam. U.S. Senate candidate Annette Bosworth is holding the land raffle through her non-profit, Preventive Health Strategies.

One man bought a ticket for the raffle after seeing a story KDLT News ran about it in October 2012. Now he’s telling us that he doesn’t think the raffle will happen, and he doesn’t think he will ever get his money back.

"Previously she did one and had the drawing, so I was like, this is legit. So I went ahead and bought a ticket," Nate Fluit said.

That ticket cost Nate Fluit $1,000. On the line, was a chance to win 80 acres of farm land in Moody County. Fluit and another person bought the ticket on October 25, 2012, when money raised through the auction was intended to send soldiers and their families on a fishing trip in Alaska.

However, that plan changed in February 2013 and Fluit got a letter from Preventive Health Strategies. The letter stated that the plan for the money had to change because of Department of Defense rules concerning active military members. The letter also offered buyers a refund.

Fluit believed the money would still help the troops so he didn't ask for his money back. But months later the raffle still hadn't happened, so Fluit got suspicious.

"I probably called their office every day and nobody would return my phone calls. Finally I got ahold of someone and I asked them the same thing, how is this raffle going?" Fluit said.

The woman told him they had sold 250 tickets, which is short of the 500 ticket goal. Fluit says the raffle deadline was July 15th, 2013.

"And at that point, I just kind of told them, hey I want my money back. I just assumed the money isn't going to the troops. I just want my money back," Fluit said.

Fluit was told in July that he would get a check in the mail. That refund never came. Now Fluit says he can't get a single person to answer his phone calls.

"It's not about the money anymore. It's just a matter of right and wrong, and obviously what she's doing, personally, I don't think is right," Fluit said.

The land raffle is still being advertised on Annette Bosworth's business website, at MeaningfulMedicine.org. It states the raffle is a partnership with F.I.R.E. Missions, which is another non-profit out of Michigan.

However, the co-founder of that group says they are no longer a part of the fundraiser. And she believes it's been put on hold because of Bosworth's run for Senate.

Leaving ticket buyers like Fluit in the dark.

"I just don't want this to happen to somebody else," Fluit said.

Phone calls made Thursday to Bosworth, her husband Chad Haber, and their non-profit Preventive Health Strategies were not answered and messages were not returned.
