SF Police Explain Protocol For Standoffs

Bookmark and Share

It's become almost commonplace to hear that a standoff has happened in the Sioux Empire. Thursday, was no different. But, with a handful of standoffs in the last few months police officers have to be prepared for any situation.

Thursday's standoff ended how police wanted it to when Cody Smith gave himself up and no one was hurt. But, just a month ago a suspect came out of a home after a standoff with a weapon drawn when police shot and killed 22 year old Jacob Westberg.

Standoffs can end differently and they can also start differently.

“Somebody that has got a serious warrant that has weapons or maybe has a history of violence, if there are people inside there where you're looking a hostage situation type of thing. There are a lot of different things that could factor into that,” said Officer Sam Clemens of the Sioux Falls Police Department.

If a standoff lasts long enough or poses a threat to the public, road blocks are used.

“The decisions to block of streets and remove people from their homes it's to keep people safe,” said Clemens.

But, police say there is no cookie cutter standoff and that everyone is different. But, a surge in standoffs recently is just a coincidence.

“They are all just isolated incidents. It just so happens that we've had a bunch of them lately,” said Clemens.

The swarm of extra officers at a standoff is a precaution a step to keep the public safe.

“I mean that's ultimately the goal in all of this. That’s why we have so many people that respond to these situations. It's to try to end them peacefully and to try to end them without any injuries to anyone,” said Clemens.

Standoffs can last for minutes or days. No matter how long they are, police do what they can for a peaceful end.
